Jesus as the bread of life

John 6:25-35

In this passage, Jesus declares that he is the Bread of Life. After the miracle of feeding thousands of people, Jesus introduced an interesting description of Himself. We can know more about Jesus and learn how he cares for the people.

What were the main concerns of Jesus?

1. Concern for “Bread”

Is Jesus concern for bread or food? The answer would be “yes.” But it does not stop there. In verse 26, Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.” Jesus’ statement in this verse reveals an interesting fact. The people were interested in the literal bread. The “bread” represents material needs and it may also refer to the basic need. The crowd gives more importance to all the “bread” in this life. They are more concern on the physical and material needs. Jesus, however, is not just concern for the literal bread, he is also concerned about their spiritual needs.

2. Concern for Miracles

How about miracles? Do you think Jesus cares for miracles? The answer to this question is also yes. But again, it does not stop there. In verse 30, the people asked him, “What miraculous signs then will you give that we may see it and believe you?” The crowd was still looking for “material” miracles. They have witnessed and experienced the miracle of Jesus when they all ate food. Jesus performed a miraculous event by feeding so many people. It was obvious that people were still looking for more “material” miracles. For Jesus, we know that he can perform more miracles. He is able to do that. However, Jesus’s concern is more than the material things in this life.

3. Concern for Eternal Life

Another important questions to ask, “Is Jesus concern for eternal life?” The answer to it is absolute “yes.” In verse 35, we can read a strong support to this thought.  “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.'”

If the people are more concern about the things in this world: concern for material and physical blessings, Jesus, on the other hand, is more concern to our spiritual needs – the salvation of our soul.

Everyone should “COME” and “BELIEVE” to Jesus, who is the Bread of Life.
