Being Less to Acquire More

The idea of less is moreYou might have heard the phrase “less is more.” Being “less” to acquire “more” is an expression that is relevant in many aspects of our lives.

This expression is being used as a strategy for productivity. The less task in front of you, the more productive you are. This is similar to the concept of focusing one thing or one task at a time. It is also applicable for personal development, especially on time management. There should be fewer distractions by eliminating them, and there is more time accomplishing important goals and tasks at the moment.

The Bible also teaches the principle of “being less to acquire more.” The apostle Paul and the apostle John have written concepts similar to the expression “less is more.”

1. Less of Yourself, More of the Spirit

Paul admonished the Galatian believers to “walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desire of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). The “flesh” in this passage is translated by other Bible versions as sinful nature. It can also mean, “yourself” or the “old you.” Paul also explained that the flesh is in conflict with the Spirit.

The more you are “to walk by the Spirit,” the less of “yourself.” Let us face the fact that the more we fulfill the desire of the flesh, the work of the Holy Spirit is less in us. It is also true with the opposite. The more we depend on the power of the Holy Spirit, the less of the flesh and ourselves.

2. Less Love to the World, More of God

Less love to the world is emphasized in 1 John 2: 15-17. John commanded his readers “not to love the world.” The reason for the author, telling this command is to understand what the world has to offer: the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the pride of life (verse 16). The devil’s tool for temptation revolves around these three things.

The more you love the world, the less you experience the love of God. It is also true with the other way around. The less you love the world, the more you experience the love of God. If you experience more of God’s love, it is also easier for you to love Him in return. You can acquire more of God’s love if you love the world less.
